Create the documentation that is missing

Legacy voice estates often contain years of undocumented changes. Before selecting a migration method, trace representative circuits, record frames and extensions, identify critical numbers and establish which services have special requirements.

Consistent labels and a controlled line register turn the existing installation into information the migration team can work with.

Choose the right conversion point

Where new data cabling is impractical, existing copper pairs may be retained between the handset position and a managed conversion point. The design still needs to consider distance, condition, power, capacity, resilience and how faults will be isolated.

Pilot the arrangement on a small, representative group before standardising it across the estate.

Prepare the network and dial plan

Voice quality depends on the wider network. Confirm addressing, quality-of-service approach, firewall rules, provider interconnection, emergency calling arrangements and number presentation. Multi-site extensions and short codes should be tested from the user’s perspective rather than assumed from configuration alone.

Migrate in controlled batches

Group users into manageable waves, record pre-change behaviour and keep a clear route back to the previous service. Each batch should test inbound, outbound, internal and multi-site calling before completion.

A staged approach provides time to resolve unexpected line conditions without turning a technical issue into a building-wide outage.
