Treat every connection as a controlled change
Patching in a critical environment starts before a cable is handled. Confirm the approved source and destination, port availability, service impact, route, cable type and rollback action. Where records conflict with the physical environment, resolve the difference before making the change.
Make identity visible at both ends
Labels should remain legible in the installed position and use a consistent naming convention. The record should connect the physical cable to the ports, service or change reference it supports. Photographs can support the record, but they do not replace structured information.
Protect the pathway and future access
Select an appropriate length, respect the cable’s bend requirements and route it through the intended management. Avoid blocking equipment, airflow or neighbouring ports. Reusable hook-and-loop management is generally more suitable than overtightened plastic ties where bundles will change and sensitive cables require controlled support.
