Infrastructure projects become easier to control when decisions, interfaces and handover expectations are made visible early. This guide sets out a practical approach that can be adapted to the building, operating environment and agreed project responsibilities.
Re-survey the completed building
Design information produced before completion rarely captures every finished wall, ceiling feature, riser constraint or material. A retrofit begins with an updated walkthrough and plans that reflect the building as residents and operators now use it.
Identify target areas, expected device types, available communications rooms, cable routes and locations where equipment can be maintained without disturbing residents.
Model coverage before fixing locations
Predictive heatmaps help compare access-point positions and reveal likely weak areas, but they remain a design tool rather than final proof. Model the actual construction materials where possible and allow for interference, capacity and roaming—not only signal strength.
Design for a finished environment
Routes should minimise disturbance to decorations, fire stopping and communal finishes. Agree access, protection and making-good responsibilities before work starts. Equipment positions should balance coverage with appearance, security and future maintenance.
Commission and leave a supportable system
After installation, validate representative routes through the building, adjust channels and power where necessary, and record the final configuration. The handover should include topology, device locations, test results, credentials procedure, warranty information and a clear route for fault reporting.
