Infrastructure projects become easier to control when decisions, interfaces and handover expectations are made visible early. This guide sets out a practical approach that can be adapted to the building, operating environment and agreed project responsibilities.

Understand what the power supports

A distribution-board change affects more than lights and sockets. Servers, network switches, CCTV, access control, alarms, charging equipment, conveyors and remote services may all depend on the same supply.

The first task is therefore a dependency map: which equipment is connected, how it shuts down, what must remain available and who is authorised to confirm its condition. Unknown circuits or undocumented connections should be investigated before the change window.

Build one integrated change plan

The electrical method, IT shutdown sequence and operational plan must use the same timeline. The plan should identify decision points, communications, isolation boundaries, backup arrangements and the latest time at which the work can be reversed.

  • Named owners for every shutdown and restart action
  • Recorded pre-change health checks
  • A clear go or no-go decision
  • Contingency time and an agreed rollback route

Control the work window

Use a single coordinator to track progress and prevent teams from acting on assumptions. Equipment should be shut down, isolated, modified and re-energised in the agreed order, with status recorded at each hold point.

If conditions differ from the survey, the team should stop and assess the change rather than improvise around a live programme.

Prove recovery, not just power

Seeing equipment lights return is not an operational test. Verify connectivity, remote access, recording, automation, alarms and representative user workflows. Record exceptions, temporary measures and follow-up actions before the site returns to normal operation.
